Sara Grose (b. 1992 Frederick, MD) is a Chicago-based sculptor working with repitition and replication to articulate a poetics of longing. Influenced by their occupational research in theater, Sara’s practice combines digital fabrication processes with scenic artisan techniques, taking a prop-like approach to object making. Sara holds an MFA in Visual Art from the University of Chicago, and a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art. They have recently been a recipient of the DCASE Individual Artist Grant, and the Pilot Art List Art Fund Award. They have been an artist in residence at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (Deer Isle ME) and ACRE Residency (Steuben, WI). Sara’s work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Trapdoor Studios (Evanston, IL) and the John Hopkins Maryland Space Grant Observatory (Baltimore, MD), along with duo shows at Gallery 1308 (University of Wisconsin Madison) and Roommate (Chicago, IL). Recent group exhibitions include shows at Mars Frankfurt (Frankfurt, Germany), W.I.H.S.H. Projects, and Parlour and Ramp (Chicago, IL).
This is my report on the diorama that I saw on our field trip. My primary source for my report is the diorama called fig.303. It shows the habitat of the Megasoreass, an extinct species with two legs from the dildalithic era. When I saw the room it was interesting. I saw the food that they were making. The Megasoreass must have been big because the words at the bottom said they ate a pig head in one bite. One time my neighbor had a pig roast in their backyard for a wedding. They put the pig on metal bars and ate it all in an hour. They must have been related to the Megasoreass. When I saw the fire in the museum I thought it was interesting. The chaperone told us to look at the questions for the field trip work sheet one of the questions asked what can you understand about the Megasoreass from looking at the habitat? I said that they must be very hungry because they built this whole triangle thing to make soup even when they already ate the pig head. The chaperone was Jonny’s Dad and I told him my answer to the question on the worksheet and he said that the soup must be broken. When I asked him why he said, “because it has a leek in it” and he started laughing but I didn’t understand why and the soup was not leeking. Nobody else laughed but Billy’s Mom smiled at him for a long time after. There was also an invasive species of plant next to the Megasoeass and the plant had all these bulbs on them and some gave them magic powers and some of them were poisonous but you couldn’t know until you ate them. So if they ate this plant they would get sick or would get magic powers but you can’t tell which one by looking at it. There were other dioramas that we saw on the field trip but I chose this one for my assignment because it was cool. I think that it is cool that they lived at the same time as a saber tooth tiger and also a shark. I thought it was cool that all of this stuff was killed because there was a big meteor. Even though it was from a long time ago the fire looked just like it does when my dad cooks hot dogs in the backyard and the water bottles look just like the ones Mrs.Costigan brings to our P.E. class. I think it is nice that things last a long time. After that we went to the gift shop. I saw a plastic toy version of the Megasoreass, it had a triangle stamped on the bottom with a 1 in it and it said “PETE”. My mom gave me $10 to spend so I took it to the cash register. There was an older girl working at the cash register andshe had scary black lines around her eyes and a lot of metal rings in her face. I told her it was cool that things last a long time and she said that this toy will last a long time too.
